Half term projects
For the academic year 2018-19, we will have two Half Term Projects for young dancers to take part in.
Into Dance Making: Spring Half Term
18-22 February 2019, 11am - 5pm
Venue: Royal Academy of Dance
About the Project
Students and young people across London and Essex are invited to take part in a week’s choreographic residency running from 18 to 22 February 2019.
Dancers will work with professional choreographer, Zosia Jo, to explore how creative ideas can become a duet or solo piece.
At the end of the week all of the students will be supported to put forward their ideas to choreograph a new work. Four choreographers will be selected enabling them to receive mentoring by a professional choreographer and support to create their ideas into a final piece during a series of additional rehearsals. These four new works will be performed at various events including the Step Live Festival in June.
How the week will run
The project will focus on the learning and exploring of each element of choreography, and by the end of the week participants will start to put their own pieces together.
The week will draw on Laban’s principles and Zosia’s own experience making work. The start of each day will include a warm up, improvisation tasks, and time to look at other choreographers’ work. The main elements of choreography will then be explored as the week progresses: Action, Dynamics, Relationships and Space, drawing these all together to start creating work by the end of the week.
The aim of the week will be to try new things and learn new techniques, and the additional rehearsal dates (for those who are selected) will give the young people the opportunity to refine their work.
About the Choreographer
Zosia Jo started her training at The Place, London and graduated from Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 2008, subsequently completing Dance Research Studio’s Speaking Dancer program. She focused on choreography from the outset of her career and started her company, Joon Dance, in 2009 with the aim of bringing professional dance performance and participation closer to communities. Her choreography brings together her multidisciplinary interests of spoken word, theatre and dance.
Zosia’s work has been performed all over the UK, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Chisenhale Dance, The Place, Blue Elephant Theatre, Dance House Cardiff, Sherman Theatre, The Bluecoat Liverpool, Chapter Arts, and Torch Theatre. Her choreographic work includes: Pillar to Post, I am an Island, The Applause Project, Play the Game (for young audiences) and solo performances, Herstory and (Un)Covered.
Working in Cairo from 2014-17, Zosia created two works with Egyptian dancers, Like Sand and Songs (Falaki Theatre and Biblioteca Alexandria 2014) and Ancient Modernity (Townhouse Rawabet 2015). Her latest work, Songs for the Body, is in development.
Zosia is also currently choreographing on BTEC students at Rubicon Dance, Cardiff and lecturing in Inclusive Dance Practice for BA students at University Wales Trinity Saint David.
The main project will be taking place between 18 and 22 February 2019, 11am – 5pm each day.
Those who are selected to create new work at the end of the project will also need to be available for rehearsals on March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31, 3.15 – 5.45pm, and all day on Sunday 16 June.
Please note, those choreographers who are not selected for the follow on project may still be required as dancers, so it is important everyone who applies is available for the dates outlined above.
