Widening Participation to Dance

"Community Dance is a vital mode of accessing the infinite benefits of participation in the dance and the wider arts. It is a powerful tool for developing social cohesion in the rich tapestry of a culturally diverse London"

Caitriona Price, Royal Academy of Dance

Step into Dance aims to widen participation to dance and central to that aim is the belief that dance should be a fundamental part of every young person’s education. However, many schools and youth agencies struggle to find teachers with the necessary skills and qualifications to deliver quality dance education. Dance is enjoying a public renaissance; television programmes from Ballet-hoo! through to Strictly Come Dancing & Dance Fever have whipped the nation into a frenzy of dance appreciation. In educational terms however as dance is classed as physical education (PE), it is difficult to precisely measure its impact in schools but the PE and School Sport Club Links (PESCL) survey showed that there was a 125% increase in students taking GCSE dance from 2001 to 2005. Clearly there is a need for more and sustainable dance provision in schools. The Case Studies based on the successful completion of the Step into Dance programme of this kind show the impact that a dance programme can have on the school, the students and also the teachers.
